Today, the modest clothes store at 227 Smith St looks no more interesting than many like it in Melbourne’s suburbs. Fitzroy Town Hall
Built over two stages between 1873 and 1890 by Architects William J Ellis & G Johnston in a Free Classical style, the Fitzroy Town Hall is the epitome of Victorian Grandeur and Civic pride, being one of the many elaborate town halls built by rival Melbourne suburbs all trying to outdo each other with bigger and better columns and colonnades.
